It is very important that the adults that care for youth are able to notice the warning signs that youth present with when they are in need of support and services.

Most experts agree that due to an increase in school violence, family stressors, substance abuse, and gang activity youth today face more serious and critical risks than any previous generation.

Characteristics of an at-risk youth:

Multiple school suspensions and/or unexcused absences
Dropping grades
Verbally abusive or aggressive
Physically abusive or aggressive
Struggling with basic family rules or expectations
Criminal Activity
Association with a questionable peer group
Suicidal or self injurious thoughts or behaviors
Sexually promiscuous behavior
Deceitful and manipulative
Noticeable lack of self-worth and self-esteem
Defies and disregards rules regardless of consequences
Youth is or is suspected of experimenting with drugs and alcohol
Withdrawn, sullen, or seemingly depressed
Spends substantial time on the street
Spends nights unaccounted for and away from home
